Hosted by Marcus Bellweather
You'll launch from a community dock and paddle a stretch of working waterway most New Yorkers never see up close. Marcus walks first-timers through the basics on the dock, so no experience is needed. Between strokes he talks through the creek's industrial past and the slow work of bringing it back.
This paddle is hosted by a volunteer boathouse that monitors water quality and pushes for cleanup of the Newtown Creek Superfund site. What's included
- Kayak, paddle, and life vest
- A short dockside lesson
- A dry bag for your phone
Plan
Clothes that can get wet, a towel, and shoes you don't mind soaking. Everything else is provided.
Sign the boathouse waiver online before you arrive. Cancel by noon that day so the spot can go to someone on the list.
The boathouse is run entirely by volunteers and the trip is free, funded by small donations. Your paddle data feeds a citizen water-quality log shared with local advocates.

Didn't think I'd want to kayak an industrial creek. It was calm and the light was something else.

Great volunteers. The launch dock is a little tricky if you've never kayaked, but they help you.
